Climbing is a vunerable activity; you feel fear and anticipation as you expose yourself to heightened risk and danger and the way I paint is a reflection of this vunerability. I explore the tension between drawing and painting and one of my main concerns is expressing the mass and volume of the boulders without producing a heavy image. Climbing is a spatial activity and space is paramount in my work, this idea of space relates to both the location of the boulders compositionally within each painting and the three dimensional space I create when I suggest a climb on the wall. Making aspect of my practice has led me into knitting chalk bags which are used to hold chalk when climbing. My work talks of freedom, ecsape and adventure.
